Who’s behind Practice of Meditation?

Hi there! I’m Natalie.

Meditation has totally changed my life and I am passionate about showing others how it can change their lives too. 

When I was about 20 years old I was struggling. I was suffering from the typical challenge of being not a kid anymore, but not-quite-an-adult – I felt the pressure of needing to know what I wanted to do with my life and I had NO idea. I also was depressed and self-medicating. BIG TIME.

I was super unhappy and lost.

I had heard about meditation before and something about it really appealed to me – I was attracted to it, but didn’t really know much about it.

I purchased a book on meditation for beginners and started reading. I practiced it a little, but didn’t have the focus or discipline to do it on a regular basis.

I put the book on my shelf… 

A couple years later I decided to try again. I bought a book on meditation that included guided audio meditations. I started to read and listen to the meditations and actually found myself meditating! The recordings helped – all I needed to do was close my eyes and follow along. I got my first taste of the kind of peace meditation can bring to your life. This was MAJOR.

I still wasn’t ready.

At this time in my life I was entering a period of major struggle. The biggest part of that struggle involved drug addiction, which was pretty much all consuming. During that time, I didn’t have the right headspace to meditate, and my life became a COMPLETE FUCKING DISASTER

Fast forward a couple years – I was lucky enough to find recovery, and with the help of some supportive communities I was finally able to stop doing drugs. I started rebuilding my life. I moved across the US a couple times and landed in San Francisco, and that’s where my meditation practice really started to grow.

I started meditating again, but this time with a clear mind. I dusted off that old meditation CD, but I wanted to go deeper. I read books on meditation and mindfulness by Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Noah Levine, Pema Chodron, and others. I was introduced to Vipassana meditation and started attending a weekly group meditation and talk. I explored several types of meditation: Zen, mantra, and mindfulness. I attended various retreats.

Once I had a consistent practice going, I noticed I felt calmer and more centered. I slept better, was less critical of myself and others, and didn’t feel so ruled by my emotions. WHAT?!

This really was a miracle!

I have learned to respond differently to my thoughts. It used to go like this: Something would happen – mundane life stuff, whatever. I would have a thought about it, and would automatically get sucked into the feeling the thought generated. This would happen over and over, all day, without any conscious thought. Meditation has given me the ability to choose where my thoughts take me. Now I observe the thought and decide if I want to indulge it or not.  

With continued practice, I started to notice that I no longer had to constantly try to distract, or run away from life happening. Practicing present time awareness has led to a whole new level of freedom.

The freedom of ACCEPTANCE.

Mindfulness gives you the ability to accept whatever is happening in the present moment. The peace that comes along with this skill is magical, especially for a girl who used to live her life in constant regret or worry!

Not constantly worrying about the future or thinking about the past creates space to manifest things that you’ve always wanted. It gave me the courage to leave my secure, but unfulfilling job and my fabulous rent controlled apartment in San Francisco to come to Barcelona and live my dream that I am living today.

This practice is so powerful, and it only takes a small amount of effort to have a REALLY BIG impact on our lives.
